Early Years

I remember my favorite dress up clothes as a little kid was my red and black cowgirl dress outfit complete with a little toy guitar that came with the dress. Little did my parents know what they were sparking in those early years… or maybe they did?

Kids have a way of knowing what they find joy in if parents can just stay out of the way. I was really lucky mine did just that. I was a quiet kid, played well with others and liked being outside and loved singing to myself. By age 10, our elemenatary school had a guitar club starting one day a week after school. I begged my parents to let me join and to buy me a $50 Alverez classical guitar with nylon strings. It was actually way to big for my hands, but the strings were easy on the fingers and I was smitten! Three years later mom and dad upgraded me (after more pleading and begging) to buy a $125 small Yamaha acoustic guitar. I actually kep that one until 2017 when I found a musically inspired 13 year old girl whose wanted to learn guitar at my church. I gifted it to her thinking that the “pay it forward” lesson is a good one for life.
